Custom-built vs. website builders

Wix, Squarespace and Shopify are genuinely good products. So when does it make sense to skip them and have a site custom-built? Here's an honest comparison.

Let's be fair from the start: website builders have put a decent website within reach of anyone, and for plenty of businesses that's exactly the right call. The question isn't whether they're good — it's whether they're right for you, at this stage.

Where builders shine

  • Speed to launch — you can be live in a weekend.
  • Low upfront cost — a monthly fee and you're going.
  • Self-service edits — change your hours or prices without calling anyone.

If you need a simple presence quickly and budget is the hard constraint, a builder is a perfectly sensible choice.

Where they start to cost you

The trade-offs show up later, and they're rarely on the pricing page:

  • Performance ceiling — builders ship a lot of code you don't use, which slows pages down and drags on Core Web Vitals.
  • SEO limits — you get the basics, but fine control over structure, markup and speed is often out of reach.
  • Sameness — templates are used by thousands of businesses, so your site looks like your competitors'.
  • Lock-in — your content lives in their system. Leaving usually means rebuilding.
  • Scaling friction — the moment you need something bespoke, you hit a wall.

A hand-built site is designed around your brand and your goals, with nothing you don't need. That means faster loads, cleaner SEO foundations, a look that's genuinely yours, and the freedom to add whatever you want later. The cost is more time and budget upfront — and needing a partner to build and maintain it.

A simple way to decide

If your website is a brochure and the priority is "live, cheap, soon" — a builder is fine. If your website is a core part of how you win customers, and speed, distinctiveness and SEO matter — a custom build pays for itself. Most businesses start on a builder and move to custom when the site starts to matter commercially.
